The USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) recently announced that the month of April will once again be designated “National Pickleball Month.” Justin Maloof, Executive Director of the USAPA, said, “Pickleball is experiencing unparalleled growth in the United States. By establishing National Pickleball Month again for April, it will help us to continue to promote the sport on a national level and help get Americans moving, stay active and truly enjoy this great sport.”
In fact, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s 2018 Pickleball Participant Report reported that the sport has 3.3 million players in the US, an increase of 12% over 2017. The USAPA estimates that each month, 300 pickleball courts are created in the U.S., either by adding lines to existing courts or building standalone courts. There now are nearly 21,000 courts in the United States.
SCPA is celebrating National Pickleball Month by hosting a “fun tournament” on Wednesday, April 17 from 9 to noon at the Breckenridge Tennis Center. A round-robin format guarantees each player eight games with a different partner in each game. The cost is $5/player.
As of March 19, there are two slots left in the competitive bracket. The recreational bracket is full but anyone can join the waitlist. To participate, email SCPA secretary Julie Worthington at email@example.com.
